Magnolia in Soft Light

Two open magnolia flowers reach across a tangle of dark branches, their long pale petals catching soft light. Blues, lilacs and touches of pink move through the whites, with warm brown centres giving the flowers a gentle focus. Behind them, loose washes suggest the shifting light and shadows of a garden.

I enjoy the contrast here between the delicate, curling petals and the strong lines of the branches. The 40 × 40 cm square format gives the blooms room to spread and lets the watercolour textures be part of the painting.
